Summary

A profoundly distressing and upsetting book。 It’s essential reading。 There also isn’t a single comma or speech mark in the entire book which takes a bit of getting used to。 Here’s one of many sections I thought was powerful: "If the thing they were fighting for was important enough to die for then it was also important enough for them to be thinking about it in the last minutes of their lives。 That stood to reason。 Life is awfully important so if you've given it away you'd ought to think with al A profoundly distressing and upsetting book。 It’s essential reading。 There also isn’t a single comma or speech mark in the entire book which takes a bit of getting used to。 Here’s one of many sections I thought was powerful: "If the thing they were fighting for was important enough to die for then it was also important enough for them to be thinking about it in the last minutes of their lives。 That stood to reason。 Life is awfully important so if you've given it away you'd ought to think with all your mind in the last moments of your life about the thing you traded it for。 So did all those kids die thinking of democracy and freedom and liberty and honor and the safety of the home and the stars and stripes forever? You're goddamn right they didn't。 They died crying in their minds like little babies。 They forgot the thing they were fighting for the things they were dying for。 They thought about things a man can understand。 They died yearning for the face of a friend。 They died whimpering for the voice of a mother a father a wife a child。 They died with their hearts sick for one more look at the place where they were born please god just one more look。 They died moaning and sighing for life。 They knew what was important They knew that life was everything and they died with screams and sobs。 They died with only one thought in their minds and that was I want to live I want to live I want to live。 He ought to know。 He was the nearest thing to a dead man on earth。" 。。。more

Terrifying, gripping。 Truly a horror story。 Beautiful in the way this stream of consciousness style is done, gripping emotionally and mentally。 A struggle for freedom and voice。 Absolutely loved this, still relevant and valid to modern society and events。

A book that will disillusion even the most patriotic about the realities of war。 A brutal and horrific concept that is carried out in a tear jerking and captivating story。 The writing of the horrors of Johnny's present situation and beauty of his life before the war are poetic and wonderfully descriptive。 Brilliant writing and a brilliant story, definitely a must read。 A book that will disillusion even the most patriotic about the realities of war。 A brutal and horrific concept that is carried out in a tear jerking and captivating story。 The writing of the horrors of Johnny's present situation and beauty of his life before the war are poetic and wonderfully descriptive。 Brilliant writing and a brilliant story, definitely a must read。 。。。more

I so wish I'd never read this book - it was too real。 It is indeed shocking, violent, terrifying, horrible, uncompromising, brutal, remorseless, and gruesome。 Several years after reading it, my sister was in an accident that left her in this locked-in state for 21 years - I grew to so hate this book。 I so wish I'd never read this book - it was too real。 It is indeed shocking, violent, terrifying, horrible, uncompromising, brutal, remorseless, and gruesome。 Several years after reading it, my sister was in an accident that left her in this locked-in state for 21 years - I grew to so hate this book。 。。。more

The classic anti war book。 While this is an interesting premise that is supposedly based on a true scenario, I found it pales when compared to All Quiet on The Western Front, and other books written by people who actually experienced war first-hand。This especially comes into pay as Trumbo's more socialist leanings take over in the last chapter to produce the long-winded polemic against government and people in power searching for the next war。 It is alo apparent in Joe's rant about being on disp The classic anti war book。 While this is an interesting premise that is supposedly based on a true scenario, I found it pales when compared to All Quiet on The Western Front, and other books written by people who actually experienced war first-hand。This especially comes into pay as Trumbo's more socialist leanings take over in the last chapter to produce the long-winded polemic against government and people in power searching for the next war。 It is alo apparent in Joe's rant about being on display。While some find this appealing, it detracted from the overall story for me, and this is not as great of an anti war book as others。3。5 stars 。。。more

A horrifying story of a soldier who is inexplicably wounded in a war to protect the democracy。 Writing is shocking, violent and uncompromising。 A lot of the book is centered around humanisation of war and breaking it down to tyranny on individual level which eventually ignites anti war sentiments。 The second half of the book does feel slow considering how intense and gruesome the first half is。 This book may not increase your knowledge on great many wars fought in the history, but it can definit A horrifying story of a soldier who is inexplicably wounded in a war to protect the democracy。 Writing is shocking, violent and uncompromising。 A lot of the book is centered around humanisation of war and breaking it down to tyranny on individual level which eventually ignites anti war sentiments。 The second half of the book does feel slow considering how intense and gruesome the first half is。 This book may not increase your knowledge on great many wars fought in the history, but it can definitely insinuate a soft pinch every time you quote an battalion’s head count with pride。 。。。more

I didn’t realize how old this book was。 I was thinking it was more Vietnam era but it wasn’t。 The book gave me chills。 It almost nauseated me because I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to feel stuck the way Johnny did and not being able to do a single thing about it。 I kept seeing this as a recommended book on lists from BuzzFeed, etc so I bought it on a whim thinking I wouldn’t even finish it。 Nope, it was impossible not to finish。

4。5This book is brutal and extraordinary。 A real punch to the gut。 Johnny's just a young man and he's dead and he's alive, how can that be? This isn't any supernatural story。 It's an anti-war novel that is meant to rip you apart in all possible ways。 How could anyone read this and still favor the horror? There were two chapters that made me cry。 One had to do with fishing and the other with Christmas。 The other chapters didn't, but truth is they all left me feeling empty。 We read from Johnny's t 4。5This book is brutal and extraordinary。 A real punch to the gut。 Johnny's just a young man and he's dead and he's alive, how can that be? 🥺https://youtu。be/WM8bTdBs-cw 。。。more

As an anti-war screed designed to hit the reader on an emotional level, I think this is unmatched。 Also, it's difficult to argue with any of Trumbo's arguments。 We celebrate sending people to war and don't want to look at the consequence。 And for many wars, Trumbo's position holds true。 There's no sense to be found in World War I or any other wars, which rely on propaganda to further the interests of various stakeholders and send young men off to battle to suffer and die。But even in his forward, As an anti-war screed designed to hit the reader on an emotional level, I think this is unmatched。 Also, it's difficult to argue with any of Trumbo's arguments。 We celebrate sending people to war and don't want to look at the consequence。 And for many wars, Trumbo's position holds true。 There's no sense to be found in World War I or any other wars, which rely on propaganda to further the interests of various stakeholders and send young men off to battle to suffer and die。But even in his forward, Trumbo wrestles with what to do with something like World War II。 It's difficult to argue that all war must be abolished in the scenario when a madman has designs on world domination and is willing to exterminate anyone who doesn't fall in line。 In this instance, war becomes a matter of survival。 The problem is that WWII is cloaked in the same rhetoric as all other wars even though all other wars are not WWII。 Reading this, I thought about the major war of my young adult life, the Iraq War, which was utterly senseless and completely by choice。 It made no one safer, but it did make certain people a lot of money。 But then I think about the War in Ukraine right now, and what choice do Ukrainians have in the matter? Are they supposed to give up their country because an autocrat says it's his? I'm not criticizing Trumbo for a lack of nuance because I think more often than not, he's correct, and I think if more people read this book, just maybe we would think twice about what a war really means before sending people to die in one。 I'm glad I finally read it, but now I definitely need something a little more uplifting。 。。。more

I wish this book was in every house。 Most people have an idea of what this story is about but that image is only a medium。 It is an exploration on what beauty actually is, what loneliness lives in us, and of course the sham motives and deceit of war that fuels a feeling of patriotism no one was born with。 This is a beautiful read, it had me choked up within the first ten pages, and swells into a such a place that the words “Merry Christmas” made me burst into tears。 This is one of the best books I wish this book was in every house。 Most people have an idea of what this story is about but that image is only a medium。 It is an exploration on what beauty actually is, what loneliness lives in us, and of course the sham motives and deceit of war that fuels a feeling of patriotism no one was born with。 This is a beautiful read, it had me choked up within the first ten pages, and swells into a such a place that the words “Merry Christmas” made me burst into tears。 This is one of the best books I’ve ever read。 。。。more

Amazing Book with an Absolutely Phenomenal Audiobook NarrationProbably the best anti-war book I’ve ever read。 Dalton Trumbo did such an amazing job depicting the horror of someone trapped in his own body, with only his thoughts to keep him company。 The way he describe Joe’s thought process is so real and relatable, how his thoughts keep jumping from this topic to the next in the exact way our thought process work。 It’s fascinating to see it represented so well on paper。And if the book itself is Amazing Book with an Absolutely Phenomenal Audiobook NarrationProbably the best anti-war book I’ve ever read。 Dalton Trumbo did such an amazing job depicting the horror of someone trapped in his own body, with only his thoughts to keep him company。 The way he describe Joe’s thought process is so real and relatable, how his thoughts keep jumping from this topic to the next in the exact way our thought process work。 It’s fascinating to see it represented so well on paper。And if the book itself is good, then the audiobook is just phenomenal。 William Dufris might be the best narrator I’ve ever heard, hands down。 He vocalized Joe’s feeling so well that I felt it was actually Joe reading his thoughts aloud。 Bravo, just absolutely fantastic。 。。。more
